How It Works

Roadbond EN 1 is a liquid ionic soil stabilizer that permanently changes how clay particles interact with water. Roadbond EN 1 works through multiple complementary mechanisms. Roadbond EN 1 improves soil performance by:

Roadbond EN 1 introduces strongly ionized sulfate radicals that displace the water molecules held to clay surfaces by weak electrical attraction. The released water is expelled through compaction, allowing the soil to consolidate to a much higher density. The exchange is permanent.

As water films around clay particles collapse, the particles aggregate into larger clusters. Dramatically improving mixing, workability, and compaction.

Roadbond EN 1 dissolves naturally occurring mineral salts in the soil and disperses them into the void spaces between particles. As the treated soil cures, these minerals crystallize into stable bonds that lock the soil structure together. The process mirrors how nature forms sedimentary rock, but in days rather than centuries.

The metals naturally present in clay (aluminum, magnesium, calcium) combine with the sulfonated components in Roadbond EN 1 to form stable, beneficial compounds, including aluminum sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and gypsum, that add significant strength.

Unlike lime, which destroys clay’s natural impermeability, Roadbond EN 1 preserves it, typically improving permeability resistance by an order of magnitude. Treated subgrades shed water instead of absorbing it.

Because Roadbond EN 1 contains no calcium, it cannot form ettringite, the destructive calcium-aluminum-sulfate hydrate that causes heaving in lime-, cement-, and fly ash–treated soils. This makes Roadbond EN 1 a proven solution for sulfate-rich soils where traditional stabilizers fail.

When used with Portland cement or fly ash, Roadbond EN 1 improves mix uniformity and clay behavior, allowing those materials to react more completely. Field experience confirms 40–50% reduction in cement or fly ash dosage with no loss of strength, plus significantly less reflective and block cracking.

Treated soils are significantly stronger and continue to gain strength over time.
